Hi, This note is mostly for myself to know when the deadline dates are (based on last year's dates), and to try to map out a possible timeline for completion. Near the end of this timline, I will try to document a few possible options if it looks like TWIST analysis will go beyond these time constraints. The guidelines from faculty of graduate studies make the timeline pretty tightly constrained (and documented in a very difficult to follow way.) There are two completion dates that look as if they could be relevant. An aggressive completion schedule might have me graduating in Fall 2005, and a fallback as Dec 31 programme end date. Fall 2005 graduation deadlines: April 30,2005 Mike submits appointment of external examiner to fac. of grad studies (choice of 2-3) July 7, 2005 I submit thesis to committee members, and notify gradsec of pending dept. oral July 22, 2005 Last day for department oral exam July 29, 2005 I submit thesis approved by committee to fac. of grad studies Aug 15, 2005 I apply to graduate Aug 19, 2005 Send program for final exam to grad studies Sept 30, 2005 Last day for final doctoral exams (first possible day is 6 weeks after July 29, which means it has to be week of Sept 19-23, or the following week). Mike needs to appoint two University examiners in addition to committee members. One examiner from in dept and one outside. Oct 7, 2005 Last day for submission of final thesis to fac. of grad studies The fallback option is Dec 31 Program completion -- technically I'd be done this fall, but I guess I don't actually graduate until Spring 2006! The deadlines for this fallback are: July 23,2005 Mike submits appointment of external examiner to fac. of grad studies (choice of 2-3) Sept 30, 2005 I submit thesis to committee members, and notify gradsec of pending dept. oral Oct 14, 2005 Last day for department oral exam Oct 21, 2005 I submit thesis approved by committee to fac. of grad studies Nov 8, 2005 Send program for final exam to grad studies Dec 9, 2005 Last day for final doctoral exams (first possible day is 6 weeks after Oct 21, which seems to mean it has to be week of Dec 5-9) Dec 16, 2005 Last day for submission of final thesis to fac. of grad studies Aug 15, 2005 I apply to graduate Based on the aggressive timeline laid out by Dick, we may be able to send publications of PmuXi July 1,2005. If I have my thesis written at that time, I just have to plug in the final numbers (over a one week period). If around July 1 it looks like the results are coming in, but that it will just be a few more weeks to finalize the results, then I can go with the fallback option of Dec 31 completion. If it looks like there is still substantial reanlaysis to be done before TWIST will be happy to publish, I need to get on with an analysis for my thesis. One option might be to do my own systematic estimates, but only use 10% of the data for the statistical determination. To do this I would need to freeze the systematic determinations, then go back and analyze 10% of the MC with a new set of blind muon decay parameters so that I can get a result to use for my thesis.
